Resident Commissioner Sees Progress on Sewer System Project in Toa Baja Built with Federal ARRA Funds

TOA BAJA, PUERTO RICO- Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi inspected the progress of a sanitary sewer project in Toa Baja, which is being financed with federal funds allocated pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Pierluisi was accompanied on the visit by Toa Baja Mayor Anibal Vega Borges, and Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) Director José Ortiz.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $17.5 million, of which $11.5 million is for construction costs. This project will improve the quality of lives of thousands of Toa Baja families who, for years, have had to deal with a problematic sewage system.

“I feel very satisfied when I visit projects like these, which were financed through ARRA. Puerto Rico has received more than $6 billion as a result of this historic legislation. It is very gratifying to observe first hand how these projects will benefit the people of Puerto Rico, as well as stimulate the economy and create jobs. The Aqueduct and Sewer Authority has invested over $148 million in federal stimulus dollars to complete 22 projects across the Island, improving our water system, and creating over 300 jobs. These improvements to the sewer system in Barrio Ingenio are vital for the well-being of its residents. I have to congratulate Director Ortiz and Mayor Vega Borges for their efforts,” said Pierluisi.

After his site visit, Pierluisi visited the new Head Start center in Toa Baja, again accompanied by the Mayor and PRASA Director, in order to present the employees there with checks of ARRA funds.
